Infrastructure As A Service (IAAS) Internet Company (www.dyn.com)

Database Alchemist 2011 - present

Dyn is the industry leader in DNS and email deliverability services. Uptime and scalability are the backbone of a company committed to engineering excellence, which prides itself for being one of the best places to work in the state of New Hampshire as well as the US. Scalability at Dyn means expertise with open source tools and going the extra mile in infrastructure. As the company has grown, the treatment of data has changed from a side effect of infrastructure, to a central asset in operations, planning, and new products and services. To lead the effort to best leverage data as an asset, I have been tapped as the Database Alchemist. The unique title implies the creative and out-of-box thinking that Dyn encourages, but also speaks to the nature of the role: a combination of developer and administrator that can bring experience in big data with traditional approaches and put a fresh perspective on solving scalability problems involving data. I am responsible for keeping all databases up and running efficiently, as well as contributing to the design of system, application and database architecture across the enterprise. Tools include MySQL, Cassandra, MongoDB, BIND, Linux, FreeBSD, Graphite, Tableau, Perl, Python, Java, all things bash, SQL and plenty of it.

Was brought in by mentor at ADI to be technical lead on Cognos enterprise setup: Cognos8, with portal, Framework Modeler, Powerplay Transformer, and various reporting modules. Also wrote initial driver for allowing use of power cube technology to execute corresponding SQL statements for TechTarget "list cutting" analysis and operational needs. Implemented initial security schema and setup. Fleshed out CognosSDK layer for statistics reporting, wrote admin scripting for other team members to complete repetitive tasks in less time. Also prototyped similar functionality with the open source reporting package known as Pentaho.

TECHNICAL SNAPSHOT

A team member that picks up the biggest challenges of the project and business.

As a contributor with a great range of backgrounds, Tim's role is whatever it takes to get the job done. Tim's experience moves up and down the technology stack, across multiple platforms. Tim's greatest strength is data modeling and component architecture. His experience in intense data driven businesses have focused him in meeting the demands of the business through data. In database technologies, Tim has extensive experience with Oracle, MySQL, Sybase and MS-SQL. Tim also has experience with Postgres and NoSQL solutions like MongoDB. His strength lies in Oracle and MySQL, and his most recent experience is dominated by MongoDB. In his last 2 roles, he was asked directly if he would consider accepting the role of DBA and represents a rare breed of programmer that can manage the responsibility of root and dba access without comprimising administrative priorities. At the server side layer, Tim's core competency is with Java and open source platforms but also includes experience developing Microsoft based components using the myriad of tools: Visual C++, .NET and VB. Tim also stays in touch with front end tools such as PHP, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, and toolkits such as GWT, JQuery or Dojo. Tim prefers to spend his day on the bash command line and daily uses tools such as perl, python, awk, mvn, and svn.
